30Days30Characters: Day 6- Spider-Man

As I put together this list of characters, I had to decide what kind of list this would be. I knew it would not be a countdown type list. Sometimes it’s hard to do a countdown and rank something. It’s hard to quantifiably say this character is better than this character. At different times in my life different characters have meant different things. What was important to me in high school is typically less important to me now. A few characters still mean the same to me, and some characters mean a lot to me now, but for different reasons than when I was a kid. Today’s character fits in that category- he meant a lot to me when I was younger and means a lot to me now, but for totally different reasons.

30Days30Characters: Day 4- Samwise Gamgee

November is starting to fly by for me. I think going through this list of characters I put together and listing why they have meant something for me has been a lot of fun and has contributed to the month going so quickly. It will be Thanksgiving before I know it. It has also been fun to start seeing some of the reactions to my list of 30 characters. Starting tomorrow, each week will have a specific medium from which the characters will be drawn. This upcoming week will be comics. To finish out this week, though, it’s one of my all time favorite characters of any medium.

30Days30Characters: Day 3- Captain Jean Luc Picard

Day number three brings us the first television character on the list. It was so hard for me to narrow my list down to just 30 characters, because there are so many great characters throughout all of film and TV and books and comics. It was especially hard with TV, because there are so many shows I enjoy, and a lot of that has to do with the characters on the show. I hope you have enjoyed the first two days of the list, and I hope you will continue to come back each day and see the newest addition. Remember to join in as well with your own list on social media using the hashtag #30Days30Characters and tag me- @thegeekymormon.

30Days30Characters: Day 2- Kaladin Stormblessed

Here we are, day number two for our 30Days30Characters. Full weeks will have a theme, like next week is Superheroes. For these first few days, though, I am talking about miscellaneous characters- just a few of my very favorite characters. Yesterday was Superman, and it was fun to put it together. Make sure you are following me on social media to be alerted when each new post goes up on the site. You won’t want to miss a single day. Feel free to join in the action on social media as well. Who would be your 30 Characters? Make sure to use the hashtag #30Days30Characters, and feel free to tag me as well- @thegeekymormon.

NaNoWriMo Part 1: The Inspiration

NaNoWriMo is coming up in November. For those of you who may not know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and it is a real thing. No, seriously. It has its own web site and everything: NaNoWriMo.org. It happens every November, and the whole purpose is to get people writing books. To “win,” all you need too do is write a 50,000 word “novel” during the 30 days of November. That’s it.

A New First Post

This is going to be a different post compared to what I have written in the past. Consider it a new “first post.” You know what I mean, the first post a blogger does when they start a blog, explaining what the content will be like and introducing themselves. That’s kind of what this will be, even though this blog has been around for a while now. June 18, 2014 was the original first post. Since that time, we have had over 300 posts published to the site and along the way, the style and content has evolved.

And along the way, I have grown Continue reading

Can Wonder Woman Save the DCEU?

The DCEU is in trouble. How much trouble depends on who you ask, but almost everyone agrees that not all is well in the house that Batman built. They need someone or something to step up and deliver a solid win in their movie franchise. A win like they haven’t seen since Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. A win they’ve been wanting while watching their competition, Marvel, have success after success. Simply put, the DCEU needs a hero. Or maybe a heroine. Wonder Woman is that Heroine. She can deliver a film that connects with existing fans while expanding the fan base further into the mainstream.

Hello 2017

Someone compared the end of 2016, or maybe just the whole year, to the Battle at Helm’s Deep in Lord of the Rings. This is one of my favorite parts of the film series. It is one of my favorite battle scenes in any film I have seen. Besides being a great action sequence, it is a pivotal moment in the story. During this battle it seems totally hopeless for the people of Rohan. They are outnumbered and outgunned, as it were. The elves come to help, but they still have all the odds stacked against them. There is a moment where you can see that even Theoden has lost all hope, when he orders them to fall back to the Hornburg. He has given up.

10 Favorite Halloween Movies

Halloween is just around the corner, and maybe you are looking for something fun or a little bit spooky to watch to pass the time on these crisp fall evenings. This is a list of some of my favorite movies to watch this time of year.

The first thing you should know about me is that I am absolutely a wimp when it comes to Halloween movies. I don’t like scary and I don’t like bloody or gory. So maybe that makes this a pretty weak list, but it’s what I enjoy. Nevertheless, if you’re not so satisfied with the list below, you could also search for horror movie suggestions on sites like HellHorror (to know more, click on https://hellhorror.com).

My 10 Favorite Movies

Recently, Tim Champlin tweeted me and asked if I could do a list of my ten favorite movies. I thought it sounded like a great idea, so I jumped at the opportunity to do it. Before I get into this list, I want to set a few ground rules. First, these are my favorite movies. I don’t know how to quantify “favorite,” but I do know that it is not the same as a list of the ten best movies. Some of these movies may not be great, but they are movies I could sit and watch again and again, for the most part. Also, you can’t argue someone’s favorite movies. You just can’t. Another rule I set for myself was limiting myself to one movie per series. Otherwise, this list would be nothing but Star Trek, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings. That would be boring. So, in no particular order, here is my list.
