It’s December, and the Doctor is Back (Finally)

It’s been a long time since we have had new Doctor Who. It will be exactly one year when the new Christmas special airs. In all fairness, this year may have felt really long to those of us who are “new” to the series. Let’s remember, thought, that from May of 1996 until March of 2005 there was nothing. No Doctor Who on TV for nearly ten years. The last episode before the 1996 TV movie was aired in 1989. Our little one year break is really nothing.

Where we left off

It has still felt like a really long time, though. I think a big reason why is where we left off in the series. Clara is gone. She was dead in what would have been a perfectly appropriate ending to her story in “Face the Raven.” I thought that episode had everything it needed to end Clara’s story. It was poignant and emotional. Then it was completely ruined by the final two episodes of the season. in them, Clara ends up in a TARDIS of her own with Lady Me, and not really dead.

“The Husbands of River Song” was a great Christmas special. Alex Kingston and Peter Capaldi were amazing together, and it’s sad that is seems like we won’t be seeing any more of the two of them together. If you really want too get the feels, watch that episode and then watch “Silence in the Library,” where she dies. She was one of my favorite characters, and I was thrilled to see her back in action.

What we can expect from the Doctor

So now, the Doctor is traveling through the universe all alone. No companion, which usually spells trouble. We know he is getting a new companion for series 10 in April of next year, so in typical Christmas special, we will have a one off adventure. This time, it involves a superhero named the Ghost and someone, presumably a villain, named Doctor Mysterio. It looks interesting, but mostly I am just excited to get some new Doctor Who.
