What Makes an Enduring Fandom

What makes an enduring fandom? From Star Trek and Star Wars, to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, what makes a fandom lasting and persisting? Why do some fandoms garner such a huge following, while other fandoms simply fall away? I think there are many factors, but for me, two of the biggest draws are the story and the characters. If those two factors are solid, I think a fandom has a chance of lasting a good long time.

10 Favorite Halloween Movies

Halloween is just around the corner, and maybe you are looking for something fun or a little bit spooky to watch to pass the time on these crisp fall evenings. This is a list of some of my favorite movies to watch this time of year.

The first thing you should know about me is that I am absolutely a wimp when it comes to Halloween movies. I don’t like scary and I don’t like bloody or gory. So maybe that makes this a pretty weak list, but it’s what I enjoy. Nevertheless, if you’re not so satisfied with the list below, you could also search for horror movie suggestions on sites like HellHorror (to know more, click on https://hellhorror.com).

My 11 Favorite Stranger Things

While my wife and I were waiting in the delivery room for our sixth child (yes, sixth) to be born, I was looking for some kind of distraction to pass the time until the little guy arrived. We had brought along our laptops and iPads just for this sort of situation. It seemed like this delivery was taking longer than we thought it would, and I was beginning to get anxious, so I turned to Netflix. I had finished most of the shows I had been watching, so I was looking for something new and good to watch. That’s when I turned to Stranger Things. I had heard people talk about it or read about it online, so I thought I would give it a try. After about five minutes I was hooked.

The Geeky Mormon’s Guide to Salt Lake Comic Con

Salt Lake Comic Con is less than two weeks away, and it is the biggest geeky event here locally each year. I am excited to be going again this year and joining in the fun with the local geek community. I thought this would be a good time to take a look at the convention and what to expect. Maybe you’ve been before, or maybe this is your first time. Maybe you are going alone or in a group or with kids. However you will be attending the convention, I hope this post will be helpful.

Sorting Night at the Dietz House

There has been a lot going on in the world of Harry Potter lately. There is a new movie coming out soon, as well as a play (for the first time ever), and the script to said play. In addition to all of this, J.K. Rowling has been putting a ton of new content on Pottermore. There is quite a bit about the different wizarding schools and magic in America. A good portion of this is in preparation for the new film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Father’s Day 2016-Some Favorite Fathers

Happy Father’s Day, everyone! Being a dad myself, this happens to be open of my favorite holidays. For this special post, I thought it would be fun to take a look at a few of my favorite fathers from some of the fandoms that I enjoy. I thought about doing a really long list, but decided to keep this one a little shorter, and a little simpler. I narrowed it down to three of my favorite fathers, so this is by no means a comprehensive list, and there is plenty of room for other fathers from your favorite shows or movies or books. In any case, I hope you fathers out there have a wonderful day, and I hope we all have a “father” in our life that we can look up to and think of on this day.

Bored Kids this Summer? Check Out Your Library

Summer is just around the corner, or for some of you, it’s already here. That means the kids are out of school, and parents are stuck trying to figure out how to keep them entertained all day. The easiest solution is to let them spend endless hours on some kind of electronic device either binging their favorite shows on Netflix or playing hours and hours of mindless app games on your phone or tablet. Of, course, that’s probably not the best use of their time. So what do you do to keep the kids entertained and engaged through the summer months?

50 Good Books: Where the Sidewalk Ends

It might surprise some of you to find out that I read more than just Fantasy and Science Fiction novels. I’m actually a big fan of reading, so I do like to spend my time reading where possible. One of my friends actually told me about this website (https://likewise.com/books) the other day. She said that they have recommendations for books, allowing everyone to find a book that interests them. Maybe I should consider looking on that website to try and find some new books to read. I also read various blogs and of course comics, and occasionally, I will read something random like a collection of poetry. Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends is a classic and should be read and enjoyed by everyone. His poems are quirky and fun and absolutely brilliant. Of course I would recommend this classic to anyone, along with his other titles like A Light in the Attic and Falling Up, and of course the ever wonderful The Giving Tree (which, because of the title, I always confuse with The Giver. They are two totally different books).

Lucy Goes to Marvel Universe Live

Lucy heading to the show.

This is Lucy. If she looks excited in this picture, it’s because she is extremely excited. In this picture she is riding the train, heading downtown to see Marvel Universe Live, and she cannot wait. More than any of our other kids, Lucy has always marched to her own drummer. She decides what she likes and what she is into based on, well, what she likes. And she loves Thor. She is obsessed with Thor. He is by far her favorite super hero. She has a birthday coming up, and we had the opportunity to bring her to Marvel Universe Live, which is a large stunt show based on characters from Marvel Comics. We thought she would really enjoy it. And boy, did she.
